This year’s Perth Royal Show 2024 showcases a limited, free-of-charge exhibition celebrating the Claremont Speedway, a cherished icon in Australian motorsports history.

The historic display is located in the Agricultural Hall of Fame building, which was originally the Old Miller’s Speedway Office.

From 1927 to 2000, the Claremont Speedway was the heart of Australian dirt track racing. The speedway was a weekly hotspot during the summer months, drawing large crowds every Friday night for a variety of races including motorcycle, speedcar, hotrod, stockcar, sprintcar, and sedan events. The Speedway was administered from the Old Miller’s building from 1970 until its closure in 2000.

A dedicated group of enthusiasts, who have meticulously preserved artifacts and records from the Speedway, have collaborated with the Claremont Museum to bring this exhibition to life. The project highlights the Claremont Speedway’s remarkable legacy and its vibrant role in Perth’s cultural fabric.

The 2023 display, which attracted over 1,400 visitors, has been revamped thanks to the support of the Western Australian History Foundation, and Town of Claremont.

The exhibition invites visitors to remember, or become familiar with, the nostalgic world of speedway racing.

Attendees can explore stories of legendary drivers such as Sig Schlam, Chum Taylor, and Charlie West, and reflect on the evolution of the sport from its early days of solo and sidecar racing to the introduction of sprint cars and grand national sedans.
