Animal Handler & Visitor Responsibilities

To help keep everyone safe and healthy at the Perth Royal Show, animal handlers, visitors and anyone entering animal display or animal contact areas should follow these simple hygiene measures.

When around animals:

• Avoid hand-to-mouth contact – do not suck fingers or objects, touch your mouth with your hands, or lick your fingers.
• Do not kiss animals or bring animals close to your face.
• Avoid wiping your hands on clothing after touching animals.
• Do not eat or drink food or water intended for animals.
• Do not eat or drink within animal contact or animal display areas.
• If you are feeling unwell, do not enter animal contact areas.
• Always treat animals calmly and respectfully.
• Clean items such as pram or wheelchair wheels if they come into contact with animal faeces or urine.
• Pregnant women, people who are immunosuppressed, and young children may be at greater risk of illness and should take additional care around animals.
• Persons returning from overseas in the last 7-10 days should, as far as is reasonably practicable, avoid direct contact with any animals or livestock

Always wash your hands thoroughly with soap and running water AFTER:

• Touching animals, their enclosures, bedding or food containers.
• Being licked, bitten or spat on by an animal.
• Coming into contact with soil, animal faeces or other animal waste.
• Handling any item that has fallen on the ground within an animal contact area. Clean the item before returning it to a child.

Always wash your hands with soap and running water BEFORE:

• Eating, drinking or smoking. Food and drinks should always be consumed away from animal areas.
• Close physical contact with other people, such as shaking or holding hands, hugging or carrying children.

Good handwashing is one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of disease.

Parents, guardians and carers should closely supervise children and others in their care while visiting animal areas at the Perth Royal Show. This includes ensuring they follow good hygiene practices and wash their hands thoroughly after any contact with animals or their environment.

These are located in the many toilets located around the Showgrounds in addition to at the Farmyard Nursery and Poultry Pavillion.
