A record number of sixty of Western Australia’s best landscape artists have been shortlisted for the $26,500 Perth Royal Art Prize for Landscape.
The prize – one of the largest in WA –attracted 200 entries in a broad spectrum of styles and mediums. First prize receives a generous $20,000, and it is non-acquisitive, allowing the winning artist the opportunity to sell their artwork.
This year’s finalists include established and emerging artists from across urban and rural WA, each bringing their own perspective to the theme of landscape.
Royal Agricultural Society of Western Australia Chief Executive Officer Robyn Sermon said it was great to see such a diversity of high-quality artworks entered in 2022.
“We are also really pleased to open this special art exhibition outside of the Perth Royal Show this year to enable the arts community to come together and celebrate and support our State’s talent,” she said.
Perth Royal Art Prize Curator Sandra Murray said the selection panel had been impressed, not only by the standard of the works submitted, but by the variation of interpretations of landscape.
“We are thrilled to have significant participation from WA artists, and I look forward to presenting an exhibition of exceptional and engaging artworks to the public,” she said.
This year’s selection panel was comprised of Isobel Wise, Associate Curator Australian and Western Australian Art Post 1970, The Art Gallery of Western Australia; Sandra Murray, Perth Royal Art Prize Curator; and Kathleen Toomath, Manager Carrolup Centre, John Curtin Gallery, Curtin University and WA artist.
First awarded in 1974, the prize provides the opportunity for artists to have their work on public display in a professionally curated exhibition and available for sale exclusively at the prize showing.
The winners will be announced on Thursday 1 September 2022.
The Perth Royal Art Prize exhibition is open for public viewing for the first time outside of the Perth Royal Show period from 2 -10 September, 10am to 4pm daily with free admission and parking at the Wilkinson Gallery at the Claremont Showground.
