The Royal Agricultural Society of Western Australia has a proud history of educating people about agriculture. Animals play an integral role in achieving this purpose, and the Society has a duty of care to support the welfare of all animals while on its property.

The Royal Agricultural Society of Western Australia takes its responsibility to provide people, facilities and practices that promote high standards of animal welfare seriously. Accordingly, all animals are:

• Provided with fresh water and adequate nutrition;
• Housed in comfortable surroundings with adequate space;
• Monitored for pain, injury and disease, and treated or relieved of suffering where necessary;
• Managed in a way that minimises stress and exhaustion; and
• Free from any drugs that modify their behaviour or mask harmful health conditions.

The care of animals on Society property is underpinned by relevant Western Australian animal welfare legislation, along with applicable codes of practice, standards and guidelines governing their transportation, exhibition and management.

Recognising the critical role people play in ensuring animal welfare, the Royal Agricultural Society of Western Australia ensures its officials and volunteers are appropriately trained and experienced in caring for animals and are supported to identify and address any welfare concerns.

All owners and appointed guardians of animals on Society property are reminded of their duty of care to take all reasonable measures to ensure the welfare of their animals.

While recognising community expectations regarding animal welfare, the Royal Agricultural Society of Western Australia also seeks to safeguard the rights of animal owners, exhibitors, competitors, officials and volunteers.

The Society responds promptly to any animal welfare incidents and works with relevant stakeholders to ensure its standards and practices continue to improve.
