Western Australia’s leading bakers have risen to the top at the 2025 Perth Royal Bread & Pastry Awards.

Held on Wednesday 23 July at Claremont Showground, the awards celebrate excellence in craftsmanship, flavour, and baking innovation – shining a spotlight on the talent and creativity driving WA’s baking industry.

This year’s competition attracted 109 entries from across Western Australia, with every product blind judged by an independent panel of six expert judges. Entries were assessed on taste, texture, aroma, and presentation, ensuring a fair and rigorous evaluation process.

O’Connor based Big Loaf Factory Bakery, the dream team behind North Street Store and Little Loaf, was crowned Most Successful Bread Exhibitor, taking home two gold medals.

Miami Bakehouse, located in Peel and the South West, built on its success in 2024 success to be crowned Most Successful Pastry Exhibitor, sweeping up four gold medals. The bakers also took home the Champion Commercial Bread title and apprentice honours. Rising star Nicola Ellis was awarded Most Successful Apprentice Exhibitor and Champion Loaf Exhibited by an Apprentice for her standout Vienna Loaf.

David Palmer, co-owner of Miami Bakehouse said:

“We’re incredibly proud of our bakery team, not just for the awards but for the dedication they show behind the scenes. Every competition is a chance to refine our recipes and baking techniques, which means our customers are the real winners because this learning ends up in the recipes and products our customers enjoy every day.

“Nicola’s awards are well deserved. Seeing a young apprentice earn top recognition so early in their career is exactly why we invest in hands-on training – it leads to moments like this.”

Champion Trophies were also awarded to:

  • Arthur Bakery, located in Eglinton, who won Champion Loaf and Champion Artisan Bread for their Sourdough Multigrain, as well as Champion Pastry Exhibit for their Traditional Plain French Croissant.
  • Just For You Bakery in Bentley, winning Champion Pie for their Butter Chicken Pie.
  • Sugar & Nice in Mount Lawley, taking home Champion Cake for their Carrot Cake.

Part of the prestigious Perth Royal Food Awards, the annual Bread & Pastry Awards provide a platform for both established and emerging bakers to benchmark their products against industry standards with entries across a range of commercial and artisan bread, pastries and cakes.

The 2025 judging also welcomed the introduction of two exciting new classes – Artisan Rye Bread and Apprentice & Pre-Apprentice Decorated Cupcakes – further broadening the platform for emerging talent and traditional baking skills.

Amy Sajinovic, Head Judge, Pastry Chef, Bread Baker, Chocolatier and Food Tech with more than 15 years’ experience praised the standard of entries this year. She said:

“We saw exceptional quality across all categories this year, with bakers delivering both technical excellence and creative flair. It’s inspiring to see such a strong commitment to craftsmanship and innovation within WA’s baking community. The addition of new classes brought fresh energy to the judging panel and some standout entries we won’t forget.”

Amy also took to the microphone as MC for the evening, joining producers, judges, and industry leaders to celebrate another outstanding year for WA’s baking industry.
